Camelina - a detail review.

Camelina is a mustard family cover crop, producing an average of 200 gallons of high grade feedstock oil a year. Our first crop runs from October through December, and the following crop is harvested in March.

Here in Florida, camelina has shown an amazing tolerance to frost and drought, needs very little fertilizer (about 40 lbs per acre per planting) and no irrigation.

Camelina press cake and stubble are FDA approved for beef and dairy cattle, swine and poultry. It can be bagged or sold in bulk to an established local market.

When planted like a checker board, camelina is the perfect rotational crop for our state’s 10 MILLION acres of cattle land. We run our cattle on the “red squares” while growing in the “black squares,” then as we harvest in December the cattle are moved over to the black squares and allowed to graze on the high protein and omega 3 stubble left behind.

Camelina makes an excellent aviation fuel and currently is the only commercially grown feedstock being used in the military drop-in fuel test programs and commercial airline bio jet fuel tests.
